Bonnie Tyler inspired extravaganza. Base on her big hit from the 80's "turn around" this commercial was a series of plate shots in a car park in Auckland. Neville our hero walks out of a generic shopping mall to overwhelming congratulations from Bonnie and her helpers. They included a flying rocker, 10 mini Bonnie's, a thirty foot gold plated statue of Neville mounted on a marble plinth, helicopter fly by showering our hero with silk petals, dog driving a pedal car wearing a helmet, pyrotechnics, banners falling from buildings and much much more!

We needed to produce a combined Taxi and Kebab shop in a car for the 30 sec Vodafone spot. A Ford Fairlane was purchased to convert the interior. Alluminium sheeting was quick, cheap and fitted the bill for a kitchen enviroment to be constructed inside the cab. With the front seat removed we fitted the revolving spit and 20kg of seasoned kebab meat. Graphics applied to the doors and a smoking chimny on the roof and we had a fully working Kebab Cab.

The Making of the bed bug.
A project VW pipe car that was ready to move on to a new owner. We found it in the South Island and with only four days before the shoot managed to get it to Auckland and start the transformation.
It had the top foil and roll cage cut off, bed head sourced and fitted. The foot of the bed manufactured to match the bed head. At the same time the engine was dropped out and serviced the clutch rebuilt and brakes overhauled.
All the controls were shifted, the brief was the student character was to be slumped in bed whilst driving thru the middle of Auckland traffic. No mean feat when you consider road and traffic regulations, council and roading restrictions and police and health and safety all in the mix.
Six stunt drivers were positioned around the bed in normal vehicles to form a rolling block and keep any public away from the bedbug. Traffic plans and control put in place and the bed was driven around downtown Auckland at 45 k for shooting it’s scenes.

The theme of this set of 3x30 second commercials was to create icy cool fantasy worlds each time a Coors beer drinker touched or tasted a beer. Some of the following shots are the in camera parts of the tvc’s that we created on a stage in Auckland, New Zealand.
The ice bar was a creation realised out of clear vinyl sheet which had been vacuum formed over patterns of blocks of ice. The patterns were made from 30 mm laminated custom wood to an economical size for the sheet material to be drawn down on. Then the 5-sided blocks were assembled in the studio by riveting and clear silicon sealant. The effect was enhanced by back spraying with a green blue printers dye, which lent the blocks that icy cool water look. The interior furniture was a mixture of real ice and vacuum formed blocks.
The real ice that the bar was carved from was kept in a refrigerated container close to where the set was being built and fork lifted onto the set when it was finally finished, it weighed about a ton and a half.
The jetty was about 10 meters long and 2.5 meters wide and was built in parts in the workshop and then assembled on location at the Black lake at Bethels Beach in West Auckland. It was towed out to the required spot and anchored with ice flow that had been made in the workshop. All the surfaces had been treated with hot wax and magnesium sulphate to give them the icy, shiny, whiteness that we needed for that frozen look in front of the camera.
The ice queen composite.
This was a two part affair. We made various sizes of snowflakes in a variety of ways. The starting point was an selection of electron microscope pictures of snowflakes. .jpg) |
